The importance of home safety and security
Your home should always be a safe and comfortable environment in which to live in. It is very important as people often spend the majority of their time within their house, therefore there are various risks including fire hazards, burglaries, gas leaks, etc. At night can be particularly dangerous, as if a problem arises its likely no one will be awake in order to stop it from escalating and becoming potential fatal for the residents. Obviously not every aspect can be safe proofed but there are several steps you can take in order to make your home as harmless as possible.

Some useful safety tips
Prevent falls by installing grab bars in the shower and bath tub, which can be held onto when washing. Also make sure you use non slip mats when stepping out of the shower, as wet surfaces can have a higher risk of sliding because there is less friction. Always keep staircases free of any clutter, and ensure lighting is bright so people can see where they are walking.
Store cleaning products, medications and any beauty products which contain chemicals out of arms reach and away from children, preferably in a locked cupboard. Child safety locks are a good idea. This will help prevent the possibility of food poisoning which can be fatal.

Prevent fires and burns by installing working fire safety equipments like fire alarms, and testing them on a regular basis. Install fire sprinklers if you build a new home. When cooking, especially when frying, stay close to the cooker at all times. Keep your hot water at 120F to avoid burns. Place saucepans with handles at the back of the stove so that they can’t be knocked over.

If you have children at home it is extremely important you take precautions in order to prevent choking and suffocation.  For example, small items such as coins, balloons, and hard round foods like nuts or sweets can be potentially fatal if choked on, so keep these away from children. Plastic bags also pose a risk of suffocation so keep these out of reach too. Remove any tags from cuddly toys. Put babies to sleep lying on their backs, and alone in their cot. Never use pillows, blankets, comforters or toys as these can stop a baby from breathing. Keep an eye on your children when they are in or near water, and stay close in case of an emergency. This can include bath times, toilets, pools, spas and even a bucket of water.

To avoid risk of electric shock, never have wet hands when using appliances. Always keep the sockets switched off and use a safety guard if you have children around. Teach them never to place their hands or objects near the sockets.

Lock all doors and windows and hide keys out of reach of children, and never place them near the door as burglars can use wires to grab the keys through your letterbox.
